What are the Difference between Single-Band, Dual-Band, and Tri-Band Wi-Fi Routers?

What is wireless band?

Wireless band or frequency bands are mainly the radio waves which carry data or information from one device to another device. There are mainly three types of wireless band- single band, dual band and Tri band.

Single Band Router:

A single band Wi-Fi router used only one frequency band that is 2.4 GHz and it is affordable but limited with only one wireless signal. Wireless band or frequency bands are mainly the radio waves which carry data or information from one device to another device. There are mainly three types of wireless band- single band, dual band and tri band.

The maximum speed of a single band wireless router is 300MBPS and also a single band Wi-Fi signal is better at penetrating objects like walls, doors, etc compare to other bands. A single band router it is compatible with almost all devices because all multiband devices typically support 2.4 GHz connection.

But a single band wireless router cannot support modern features like APP based monitoring system or device prioritization etc. So you cannot control it with your mobile device.

A single band router is suitable for small home and small offices and with this single band router you can easily completed your day to day work like- sending email, documents, watching video, reading books, listing music etc without any interrupts.

Dual band router:  A dual band router used two frequency bands that are 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and the price of a dual band Wi-Fi router is high compare to single band. A dual band router provides faster speed and flexibility; the maximum speed of a dual band router is up to 2,176 Mbps or more.

Because of dual band support both 2.4 and 5 GHz band so that is has less connection or interference issues and provide more stability compare to a single band router.

Dual band Wi-Fi router comes with long range capacity and better signal strength compare to single band. A dual band Wi-Fi router can switch automatically between two different bands when it required so that it is compatible for both devices which support 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band.

Because of strong signal and high speed a dual band router is suitable for high resolution video streaming such as 4K, high resolution online gaming etc. A dual band wi-fi router support modern features like APP based monitoring or device prioritization.

Tri Band: A tri band Wi-Fi router used three frequency band- One 2.4 GHz band and Two 5 GHz bands for optimal performance.

A tri band router support more devices due to its additional bands compare to other two bands. A tri band router can support up to 2166 Mbps on each 5 GHz band.

It comes with three separate bands that mean it has three times more bandwidth compare to other two bands. You can dedicate each band to separate devices in your office or home to get high speed and lowest interference.

Most of the tri band wi-fi router has MU-MIMO (Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology where device are able to delivers high-speed Wi-Fi to multiple devices simultaneously and also it support modern features like APP based monitoring or device prioritization.
